Entrepreneurship in Asia & Europe

Panel discussion and networking session.

Europe has long history in developing advance technologies, particularly in green energy technology, telecommunications and chemical technology. As Asia is growing, the need for such technologies escalates to accommodate the improving Asian living standards.

Together with venture capitalists, entrepreneurs, graduate students, and MBAs from INSEAD, NUS, and NTU, come learn from the entrepreneurial scenes across continents. Come network with an audience of Asian and European background, it will be thrilling explore the opportunities lie within.

Arcot Desai NARASIMHALU
Chairman, SMU Business Innovation Generator

Arcot Desai Narasimhalu has about thirty years of experience in Innovation and Innovation Management. He has formalized his experience with a study of successful innovations leading to an innovation framework he has named Innvoation Cube. He has initiated and directed several technology innovation grounps and has helped transition them into product or service innovations in the commercial world. He has also significant experience in IT Management and is currently very active in the field of IT Governance. He has established active networks in IT Governance with both the industry and academia.

Desai is a Practice Professor of Information Systems at the Singapore Management University with the School of Information Systems where he is also the Associate Dean for Student Programmes and External Relations. He also helps run SMU's incubation center called Business Innovation Generator. He is also an advisor to start ups in the technology arena.

Doris Yee
General Partner, iGlobe Partners

Doris has over 18 years experience in engineering and technology investment. She joined iGlobe Partners in February of 2000. Currently Doris serves on the boards of ForteMedia Inc., Kilopass Technologies Inc. and Nexfon Inc. Since 2003 she serves on the Investment Committee of iGlobe Treasury Fund, a NZ$31 million fund supported by the New Zealand Government.

Before joining iGlobe Partners, Doris held senior management positions at the National Science and Technology Board (NSTB) of Singapore, a government agency promoting R&D and its commercialization. During her eight years (from 1991 to 1999) at NSTB, she led the organization’s efforts to promote R&D investments in the electronics and telecommunications industries. She spearheaded the Research Incentive Scheme for Companies that resulted in R&D commitments by major corporations exceeding US$1 billion from 1993 to 1999. Working closely with researchers and entrepreneurs, she also seeded new ventures and provided consultation on business planning, market strategy and government seed capital.

Prior to the NSTB, Doris spent seven years in research & development undertaking projects involving security and communication technologies at Chartered Electronics Industries (a member of the Singapore Technologies Group) and at Telerate, a U.S. financial data services company.

Doris earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical & Electronics Engineering with Honors in 1985 and MBA in 1992 from the National University of Singapore.

Carmelo Pistorio
Founder and Managing Partner, Upstream Ventures

Carmelo Pistorio, has over 15 years international entrepreneurial experience across multiple high-tech industries including software, semiconductors, and environmental systems and solutions. His operational experience spans all stages of a startup: he has held positions ranging from founder and investor to senior executive for operations, and has served on the boards of a number of companies across Europe and Asia. The vision of Upstream Ventures is built on Carmelo’s extensive experience as an Angel investor.

He currently serves as a Committee Member of the SVCA (Singapore Venture Capital and Private Equity Association) and as a panel member on TEC (The Enterprise Challenge), which responds to the Prime Minister’s Office. He is also a director on the board of the ICCS (Italian Chamber of Commerce in Singapore) and serves on the board of the Pistorio Foundation, a charitable foundation founded by his father Pasquale Pistorio. Carmelo serves on the boards of Upstream Ventures’ core portfolio companies including XID Technologies Pte. Ltd.

Carmelo earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy and History from Tufts University in Boston, MA, USA.

Jean-Fabrice Cope
Vice-President, INSEAD Entrepreneurship Club

Jean-Fabrice is currently an MBA participant at INSEAD's Singapore campus. Prior to joining the program he spent 4 years within the French international retailer PPR. He was in charge of a 85-employees FNAC store in Madrid during 2006 and 2007, which specialized in four product lines: consumer electronics, books, movies and music, accounting for €18 Mn sales.

He graduated in 2004 from HEC School of Management (Paris), where he obtained a M.Sc. in Entrepreneurship (HEC Entrepreneurs). There, he was involved in various venture projects, among which, the turn-around of a financially distressed luxury shoe retailer and the launch of public utilities centers in French rural zones.

During the last 10 years, Jean-Fabrice has maintained strong ties with Asia, starting with Japan. He spent several months at Tokyo Marine and Fire Insurance, Tokyo office, to investigate the Japanese decision process "ringi seido". He joined the board of INSEAD Entrepreneurship Club (IEC) in Singapore and is now in charge of developing IEC's activities on Entrepreneurship in Asia.

In parallel, he is working on the creation of a "French-Singaporean-Foundation", to foster exchanges between young leaders and entrepreneurs from the two countries.

Jean-Fabrice also founded a career mentoring program for junior entrepreneurs and executives in Paris (Cercle MBC Business Club).
